25% of Americans Don’t Show Their Teeth – Here’s Why

A survey from the American Dental Association included this unfortunate statistic: 1 in 4 American adults don’t like, or completely avoid, smiling because of the poor condition of their teeth. That means that 25% of all American adults, tens of millions of people, are afraid to do the most human thing in the world — smile.

There could be many reasons for this, but poor dental hygiene and stained, yellow teeth are two common reasons.

Yet when it comes to dentistry, American’s are surprisingly proactive. Around 62% of adults between the ages of 18 and 64 visited the dentist in 2014, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That’s a pretty impressive number. Of course, that also means 38% of Americans did not visit a dentist that year.

For those of you with stained teeth that make you feel self-conscious, there are simple ways to brighten your smile. Those of you that are familiar with teeth whitening already know that it only removes surface stains, and that professional teeth whitening lasts longer than DIY home methods.

Regardless of the method, teeth whitening does work for self confidence. About 82.5% of people that have gone through the procedure say that their smile improved after. Now, any cosmetic dentist will tell you that the procedure will not work on all teeth. Teeth whitening requires bleach, and if your teeth were always a little off-white, then that might be the shade you have to accept. Even professional teeth whitening won’t change that. Some individuals are just born with darker teeth, and no amount of bleaching will be able to change that basic fact of nature.

Fortunately, the vast majority of adults are candidates for teeth whitening. For those of you who are nervous about bleaching your teeth and want to start small, whitening strips can work in the short term. These strips have a concentrated dose of hydrogen peroxide that is low enough to avoid irritating the gums, but high enough to make a noticeable difference. It is a good place to start for individuals that have never bleached before.

But after you’ve experienced the strips, you may feel like you would appreciate stronger and longer lasting effects. At this point, the only place left to go is to see a professional. You’ll need a cosmetic dentist, so reach out to find a local dentist’s office and see if they offer the service. Only dentists and medical professionals can use stronger bleaches, and their experience and skill will protect your gums, lips, and mouth from irritation.

Without proper, professional assistance, you can actually burn your mouth, meaning you really shouldn’t try this at home.

Professional teeth whitening is the longest lasting, most thorough option for bleaching. It is also the safest. There are little to no side effects to medically performed whitening. There may be some sensitivity, but that is temporary and will fade within a day. It is also recommended to avoid food or drinks that stain for up to three days after the procedure, to avoid staining again.

If you are self-conscious about your smile, or the shade of your teeth, then it’s time to consider professional teeth whitening. Contact a cosmetic dentist near you for more information, and then get ready to start smiling again.
