Moderation Is Key: 5 Foods That Can Stain Your Smile

There is no getting around the facts: some foods stain teeth, and many people love those foods. There is nothing wrong with eating these foods intermittently, but moderation (Combined with frequent visits to a dentist) is key to keeping your teeth nice and white. According to research, 1 in 4 American adults avoid smiling due to their mouth and teeth. Below is a list of foods that require moderation in order to maintain good mental health.

1. Tea

Many people may be surprised to see this on the list, but Tea is the morning drink that stains teeth the most. According to WebMD, “Tea causes much worse stains than coffee. Iced tea or brewed tea, it doesn’t matter.” Like anything else, it is okay to have Tea, even regularly, but the amount should be moderated.

2. Wine

This one might not come as a surprise to many, especially darker wines. However, white wine is a culprit too. Red wine has lots of chromogens, which stick to and stain your teeth (Which might make you need to visit a dentist office), and are also high in tannins, which allow other substances to stain your teeth. Despite its color, white wine is also high in tannins, allowing foods like berries to stain your teeth.

3. Soda

This is perhaps one of the most predictable on this list, but let’s look at the different types of soda. Dark colas (Like Coke) are the worst, due to the chromogens and the high acid content which softens your teeth. Dark colas should be limited to intermittent consumption. While clear sodas (Like Sprite, 7-up, and ginger ale) may not have the chromogens that come with the dark color, it is still high in acid content, which can open teeth up to stains from other substances. Not to fear, though, just like anything else, make sure to moderate your consumption, and all will be well. Drinking soda through a straw also helps stop most of it from touching your teeth. Instead, it will touch the roof of your mouth, which you should also brush.

4. Fruits

While fruits are an important part of a balanced diet, they are also potential teeth stainers. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, tomatoes, pomegranates, and grapes all can stain teeth. Nearly all fruits are high in acid content, and darker fruits can stain your teeth themselves. A good rule of thumb, as said by WebMD: “Fruit that would stain your clothes will do the same thing to your teeth.”

Strategies for preventing and/or treating teeth stains

While many of these foods and drinks are not the best thing for the whiteness of your teeth, there is a lot you can do to help your teeth while still eating the foods you love. One thing you can do, especially for your morning coffee or tea, is to brush your teeth shortly after eating or drinking something that will stain your teeth. This will reduce the number of times you would have to visit a dentistry office for whitening purposes. If you are at a restaurant or dinner party at someone else’s home, you can excuse yourself after eating and rinse your mouth with water. Obviously, it is not as effective as toothpaste, but it will help.

Another thing you should do is find a dentist and regularly visit the office. There are many review services online that give you reviews about the quality and service for dentists. For example, if you are looking for the best dentist in Miami, search online “Best dentist in Miami”. As previously stated, there are a lot of websites online that are dedicated to reviews, many of which review doctors. For example, many people recommend Dr. Koch at Gables Dental Care in North Miami Beach. One reason people recommend him is that he is a Portuguese speaking dentist (And many might say that he is the best dentist in Miami). If you are looking for a dentist who is specialized like this, such as a pediatric dentist, the internet is the best place to locate them. Whether you are looking for the best dentist in Miami or anywhere else, search them up and make an appointment for a check-up and a cleaning.
